Reflections on the 2017 ILA Literacy Conference

Educational conferences are wonderful opportunities to learn new teaching methods, make connections, and get refreshed for the upcoming school year. This year's International Literacy Association 2017 Conference was no exception! We heard from a lot of great speakers and educators from all over the world whose passion for education was truly inspiring.

Fountas and Pinnell held two powerful sessions at ILA this year: "Teaching for Coherence: A Design for Literacy Instruction" and "Responsive Teaching: Four Keys to Effective Decision Making Within the Guided Reading Lesson." Below are some of the most favored bits of wisdom we took away from those two discussions. We invite others to share their thoughts on these or anything else about their experience at ILA 2017. "In guided reading, you're not teaching the text or words, you're teaching a child to think." ~Irene C. Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell on Responsive Teaching

"You should identify priorities for teaching based on what you know about the children." ~Irene C. Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell on Responsive Teaching

"Authentic literacy means kids engage in literacy in school like they do in life." ~Irene C. Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell on Teaching for Coherence

Next up, the much-anticipated Multi-Day Institute, "Create Your Vision: Getting Started Fountas & Pinnell Classroom™" in Baltimore Maryland from July 31 to August 3, 2017! There's still time to register if you haven't already. In this interactive four-day institute, Fountas and Pinnell will present their vision to lift students' literacy learning through authentic experiences in reading, thinking, talking, and writing. They will show how the instructional contexts within FPC work together to develop coherence in the literacy learning of every student across the grades.
