Practice Story Sequence
Introduce the child to a cumulative rhyme such as “There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly,” “Old MacDonald Had a Farm,” or another cumulative rhyme. After you’ve recited the rhyme together several times and the child is familiar with it, have them create a set of picture cards representing each of the animals in the rhyme with art supplies and index cards or half-pieces of paper. Then, have the child put the cards in order to retell the story. Discuss whether the repeating pattern helped them remember the story and the order of the animals.
