Use Drawing to Show Your Thinking

Talk about the way an illustrator or artists uses drawing to show their thinking on paper. Work together to pick out illustrators the child knows who are especially good at showing their thinking on paper. Then, choose a simple object for the child to draw, such as a flower in a vase or a bowl of fruit. Tell them that the first thing artists do is look carefully at what they are drawing. Have the child look carefully at the object and talk about what they notice. Then, use art supplies and blank paper for the child to draw the object.
