Explore the Influence of Loss in Art and Poetry

Explore the Influence of Loss in Art and Poetry

Explain to the child how sometimes loss in someone’s life can spark creativity, and how many artists and poets channel inner sadness and loss to create. Some artists and writers even use art or writing as a form of therapy or as a coping mechanism. Using Internet resources or available books, explore poems and pieces of art that stemmed from loss. The student might explore Vincent van Gogh’s “Old Man in Sorrow” or Edgar Allen Poe’s “Annabel Lee.” Invite the student to think about the influence of loss on the chosen pieces of work, to write down their reflections, and then to discuss with you what they have observed. Bonus activity: the student can then use a medium of their choosing to write about or depict the loss of someone or something that they have experienced or perhaps that others they know have experienced.
