Honoring Those We’ve Lost
Explain to the student that creating something new can sometimes help overcome pain felt from experiencing loss. For example, art therapists can use art to help patients overcome a variety of pain and trauma. You may wish to invite the student to use book and Internet resources in order to discover more about the workings of art therapy. Invite the student to think about someone or something they’ve lost in their own lives, and have them create a piece of art to honor or represent the person or thing they’ve lost. Provide the student with art materials and encourage them to bring in objects from home that connect in some way to their chosen person or thing. As an alternative, invite the student to choose a fallen veteran or hero and do research to gain further information. Then they can use art to remember and honor that person.
