Explore Different Styles
Talk with the child about the different types of media that artists use when illustrating books. Share some examples of different styles of illustration, including watercolors, torn and cut paper, and collage. You might also want to point out to the child the different color choices that illustrators make, as well as whether or not their illustrations are highly detailed and realistic or more abstract (show several different examples). Have the child talk about which style they like best, and why.
Gather a variety of art supplies for the child to use, such as pre-cut and uncut colored construction paper, colored tissue paper, watercolor and tempura paints in a variety of colors, colored pencils and markers or crayons, glue, and plain white paper. You might also include materials like newspaper and found objects for collage. Over time, have the child create artwork in all of those different mediums.
