Write Poems

Have the student choose a favorite animal or some other living thing, such as a flower or a tree, and have them find 2-3 facts about the subject they chose. Have them use the facts they found to write a short, lyrical poem about the subject, with a focus on sensory images and descriptive language. Have the student illustrate the poem. Then, have the student use the facts they have gathered, and their poem, and create a short hybrid text that more clearly separates the factual information from the poetic language. Talk about similarities and differences between the two forms.
