Appreciating Illustrations

Choose a picture book or graphic novel that uses illustrations or other graphic elements. It can be a book that you read to/with your child or one that your child reads independently. Have your child select their favorite illustration or graphic element. Encourage your child to talk about or write about the following:

Why do you think the illustrator/author chose to draw or include that picture? Why is this illustration your favorite? It might also be fun to encourage your child to select a favorite part of the book and create their own illustration. Have them write about why they chose that section of the book to illustrate themselves. Why did you create the illustration the way you did? What colors did you use? Which characters or images did you represent? Enjoy reading, writing, talking and illustrating together!
