Talking About Books with your Child

Here are some topics and conversation starters that you might try with your child as you read and talk about books together:

  • Discuss how the book is like something in your child's life or your life. "That's like...." or "That reminds me of..."
  • Point out the people, characters or animals in the book and what they are like.  "That (person or animal) is funny. It made me laugh when they...." or "What do you think (the character) is going to do?"
  • Imagine what might happen next.  "What do you think is going to happen?" or "I think (event) might happen because...."
  • Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Encourage your child to share their thoughts and ideas, share some of your thoughts and experiences, and remember a good book conversation sounds like two friends enjoying a book together. Enjoy!
