FAQ Friday: When do I begin LLI with kindergarteners?

FAQ Friday_X_021320

Q: When do I begin LLI with kindergarteners?

A: LLI is particularly important for the lowest-achieving children in kindergarten. It serves as an important prevention program for literacy difficulties in subsequent years of schooling. We suggest that classroom teachers engage kindergarten children in rich literacy opportunities including interactive read-aloud, shared reading, interactive writing, and writing workshop for several months prior to selecting them for the LLI Orange System. The Orange System may be used with older children at the beginning of the school year.

Typically, LLI is started with kindergarten students around the 4th month of school after time is spent working on classroom behaviors, acclimation to school, and early literacy behaviors.

Even with many high-quality literacy opportunities, some children show extreme difficulty in early literacy learning. LLI can give kindergarten children a boost so they can begin grade one at the same level as their peers.
