Understanding Characters Through Writing and Drawing
Choose a book with strong characters. It can be a book that you read to or with your child, or one that your child has read independently. Create a graphic organizer: draw a grid with three columns and three rows, like a tic tac toe board. In the first column, have your child write the names of three characters. In the second column,
have them write down a defining quality/trait of that character, like, "brave" or "loyal." In the third column, invite your child to draw a picture representing that character.
Encourage your child to talk about their graphic organizer: explain why each character was chosen, why they selected each character’s quality/trait (cite examples from the book) and describe their drawing.
